Anaheim Ducks: Is Jakob Silverberg staying or on his way out?
By Redan Lopez
Scenario Four – most plausible: The Ducks extend Silfverberg this offseason or during this upcoming season.
The best case possible is the Ducks choose to extend Silfverberg by looking at things from the following vantage point: He is a great all-around, top six forward that is too valuable and versatile in several aspects of the game. He is dependable on both ends of the ice and still in the prime of his career at 27 despite last year’s down year. Losing him would hurt the team significantly.
GM Bob Murray is adamant about signing Silfverberg long term.
Ducks management could also view Silfverberg as a solution to the Corey Perry problem on the right wing, where Perry has declined in goal scoring the last two seasons. Reasoning can be made that Silfverberg can perhaps do a little more to supplement the goal scoring that Perry cannot generate at this stage of his career.
Having Silfverberg stay may even be a blessing in disguise for the Ducks. They would have such a cap crunch with Silfverberg’s raise that they would be forced to integrate more of their promising youngsters from the minor leagues in the lineup. It might finally open the door for the Ducks to add more youth to an aging forward corps.
The key point here is Ducks’ management knows what they are getting with Silfverberg and are confident in what he brings the team. He gives you a lot, and the Ducks cannot instantly replace what he does on the ice with the inexperience of younger players. He keeps them competitive.
In essence, Silfverberg should be seen as a key player that fills multiple roles and helps the Ducks succeed now with its current core. Extending Silfverberg is the right move to make.
