Los Angeles Chargers will be just fine without Jason Verrett
By Jason Reed
For the third consecutive season, Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett has suffered a serious injury, likely ending his Chargers’ career.
In what has become familiar news for Los Angeles Chargers‘ fans, cornerback Jason Verrett has suffered another injury, this time ending his 2018 season before it even began.
Verrett tore his Achilles in a conditioning drill on Friday. Injuries have been in the forefront of the former first-round pick’s career since he was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2014. Verrett has played just five games over the last two seasons.
While you certainly cannot blame a player for his injuries, with Verrett’s contract expiring, it is hard to see the Chargers committing to a new deal with a corner that will have missed 55 of his first 80 games as a pro.
This injury has also thrown some doubt into the minds of fans that were entering training camp with so much promise. The Los Angeles Chargers have been painted as dark horse Super Bowl contenders and legitimately look like one of the most well-rounded teams in football.
One of the best parts of the roster is the secondary, which thrives alongside an elite pass-rush that effects even the best quarterbacks in the league.
Losing Verrett is obviously a big loss to an already great secondary. However, the Chargers should not be reaching for the panic button just yet.
Yes, the Hunter Henry injury definitely hurts and does give the team a worse outlook at the tight end position. However, the Verrett injury is just another day in the office for the Chargers.
The team has built a very talented core consisting of Casey Hayward, Trevor Williams and Desmond King at cornerback. That right there is a great three-man rotation. Add in a very underrated strong safety in Jahleel Addae and the best safety in the 2018 NFL Draft in Derwin James and the Chargers have gotten better.
Even without Verrett.
Does it sting? Absolutely. Los Angeles would obviously be better with Verrett taking snaps alongside Hayward, serving as one of the best corner duos in football.
It is not the end of the season for the Chargers. In fact, it does not hurt the team’s title chances at all. All LA needs to do is play like last season and a deep run into the postseason is more than possible.
The Los Angeles Chargers should have done it last season without Verrett, if it was not for a few key missed kicks. This year, without Verrett, the Chargers will make that run.
