Los Angeles Chargers: The one big standout from preseason week 1
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Chargers were unable to pick up a win in the team’s first preseason game, yet still, there was a huge winner on the Chargers roster.
The Los Angeles Chargers are finally back in action but fans are going to have to wait to see the team’s first year of a new season.
The Chargers took on the Arizona Cardinals in week 1 of the NFL preseason and fell to Arizona, 17-24. It was a competitive game, coming down to the last play where the Chargers were yards away from a touchdown and ensuing game-tying extra point.
The advantage heading into the game seemed to go to the Cardinals, who would be testing rookie Josh Rosen out at quarterback for most of the game. Although Rosen attempted the most passes, his feeble 6-13 night with 41 yards was not extremely important.
Regardless, the Los Angeles Chargers took a loss that does not really mean anything. In the preseason, the biggest wins are finding impact players that team personnel may not have expected to perform in the regular season.
It is about deciding roster spots. On Saturday night, there was one significant standout that helped his roster case — wide receiver Geremy Davis.
The Chargers are very deep at wide receiver so any receiver looking to make the roster throughout camp and the preseason was going to have to perform. Davis did just that on Saturday.
Davis was easily the biggest producer on the field, catching four passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. No other player on the team had 50 or more receiving yards.
Oh, and in case you missed it, Davis made this ridiculous catch for a 47-yard touchdown.
Besides the catch, Grant looked good out there and is going to be fighting for a reserve spot in the receiving corps. Heading into the game, Davis was listed as either the fifth or sixth receiver on the depth chart.
That alone may be just fine for a roster spot but Davis further cemented his case on Saturday night with a spectacular catch and all-around good performance.
If this is consistent throughout the preseason, Davis could evolve as a potential fourth option for Philip Rivers, opening the door to trade Travis Benjamin for more needed pieces. While there is still a long way to go, Davis at least set the foundation to prove he will contribute next season.
Geremy Davis was the lone big standout from a preseason game that felt like nothing more than an unimportant preseason game. For Davis and the Los Angeles Chargers, though, this game was extremely important.
