Former NCAA and NFL coach Chip Kelly is back, and there are many questions of what the UCLA Football team will look like.

Chip Kelly and the UCLA Football Bruins agreed on a  five-year $23.9 million contract. It will take kelly some time to work his magic with the Bruins, to get them to championship form. The Offense is being restructured, and the top priority is to find a quarterback. The defense will also be going through a transition with a scheme change, but there are pieces to build around.

On Offense:

The Bruins have a significant hole to fill at quarterback with Josh Rosen in the NFL.  Devon Modster was the number one option going into spring and has experience. Former Michigan Quarterback Wilton Speight transferred to UCLA, in a strange move because he is not a run-pass option quarterback. The Most talented quarterback the Bruins have is freshman Dorian Thompson- Robinson.

The Bruins have running backs, but they need to prove they can be useful. Balp Olorunfunmi and Soso Jambo lead an experienced group. Martell Irby and Kazmeir Allen, both freshman, are lighting fast backs who fit what Kelly needs.

At receiver, the position the Bruins lost two key receivers, Jordan Lasley and Darren Andrews. They combined for 129 catches and 19 touchdowns. The number one target will be Theo Howard; tight end Caleb Wilson and Michigan transfer Devin Asiasi will also be featured in the passing game.

Only two started are back at the offensive line. The line is a huge weakness for the Bruins, but Kelly’s up-tempo offense could help cover it up.

On Defense

UCLA is switching to a 3-4 system this year. That change will take its toll on the defensive line where there are some quality players, but size and depth will be an issue.

At linebacker former top recruits Keisean Lucier- South and Jaelan Phillips can thrive as edge rushers in this 3-4 system. Former five-star prospect  Mique Juarez is back with the Bruins after leaving the team last summer. Juco transfer Tyree Thompson has a chance to be a significant factor and Khys Barnes can be one the teams leading tacklers.

The Scodary is lead by playmaking safety Adarius Pickett. The corner situation is solid with Nate Nate Meadors and Darnay Holmes a rising star. WIth a more attacking style defense, the secondary will have a chance to make big plays.

Special Teams

JJ Molson made 17 0f 21 field goals, and punter Stefan Flinoft averaged 42.9 yards per kick.

Kelly is in full rebuilding mode with this Bruins team. They do have talent, but there are issues on both sides of the ball. I think it will be a couple of years before the UCLA Football Bruins will compete for the Pac-12 title.
