USC Football: Quarterback competition coming down to the wire
With the 2018-2019 college football season just around the corner, the quarterback competition for the USC Football Trojans is heating up.
The USC Football quarterback competition is coming down to the final weekend before the kick off of the 2018 college football season.
Redshirt freshman Jack Sears, redshirt sophomore Matt Fink and true Freshman JT Daniels all received decent practice time with the first-team offense over three weeks of training camp.
Daniels has a big arm and definite potential. Fink and Sears are both talented quarterbacks and have been around longer than Daniels, potentially making them safer options for the start of a tough early-season schedule.
USC starts the season against UNLV at home, then hit the road to play Stanford and Texas. The two road games could be a massive task for the 18-year-old Daniels.
“Another week does not hurt. We’re getting plenty of work with all three, which is good, and to think it makes all three of them better players if called upon during the season”, Helton said, per Los Angeles Times.
According to the Times, Daniels appears to be the favorite to win the job as he completed 17 of 21 passes for four touchdowns in two team scrimmages.
Fink is probably the furthest along at running the Trojans offense because he has two seasons in the program. He is athletic but not much of a passer as Daniels and Sears. Fink also is the only quarterback on the roster to attempt a pass in a game.
Sears is all around talent but has shown a tendency to turn the ball over in practice. But he has a higher upside then Fink and could develop into a solid starter.
Coach Helton plans to meet with all three quarterbacks and their families before announcing his decision before the season opener against UNLV.
