Los Angeles Lakers: Grading every move of Magic Johnson’s tenure
By Jason Reed
Magic Johnson made plenty of promises when he assumed his role as President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Magic Johnson is the perfect example of an athlete being smart post-retirement. From owning teams to different ventures in the entertainment industry, Johnson has been busy in increasing his net worth and his overall presence in the city of Los Angeles.
Johnson took up arguably his most important post-retirement role when he agreed to be the Los Angeles Lakers President of Basketball Operations in February of 2017. Despite owning the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks and announcing the MLS expansion team, LAFC, this role was Johnson’s most important.
Alongside new general manager Rob Pelinka, Johnson was tasked to turn the Los Angeles Lakers around, who were in the worst stretch in franchise history. While the stretch was not too bad in the grand scheme of things, it was uncharacteristic for the Lakers franchise that has been nothing but loyalty.
Previous President of Basketball Operations Jim Buss was not doing a great job and Johnson was hired not only in a mop-up role but to return the Lakers to a level of excellence similar to when he manned the court during arguably the best period in team history.
Johnson has done a fairly good job in the year and a half that he has been in charge, despite the two tampering fines. With Johnson’s second offseason practically coming to an end, we decided to rank every single significant move that the Los Angeles Lakers have made under Magic Johnson.
