Los Angeles Dodgers: Facing Zack Greinke in a must-win game
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing former Dodger Zack Greinke on Wednesday night in a game that is must-win to keep an NL West lead.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have entered the point of the season with four games remaining when the team cannot lose.
The Colorado Rockies are just half a game behind the Dodgers and the Boys in Blue must win out to guarantee that the worst thing to happen is the Rockies tie the Dodgers in the division. Granted, this all depends on what the Rockies do in their final five games as well.
The Rockies are on fire since being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers and have won five games in a row. The way they are looking, we cannot assume that they will lose any of the last five games.
While the chances are that the team has to lose at least one game, the Dodgers cannot count on that and instead need to keep on winning. The rest will figure itself out.
Last night was a hiccup in that plan as the Dodgers could not come up in key situations to get runs home. Despite tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, the Dodgers walked away with a 4-3 loss.
The bats are going to be looking for vengeance on Wednesday as they face former Dodger himself, Zack Greinke. The Dodgers need to get to Greinke early and prevent him from finding his groove.
With this being the team’s bullpen game, the offense is extremely important. Here is who we think will lead the Los Angeles Dodgers’ surge tonight against the Diamondbacks.
Sarah’s pick — Current streak 3: Matt Kemp
My pick for today, after last night’s crushing loss, is Matt Kemp.
We’ve been saying it all season, but Matt Kemp is one of the best hitters on this team, and the Dodgers are going to need him if they’re going to win this last game against Arizona.
Walk off losses like last night are always heartbreaking, but are even harder to grasp when it happens during the most important week of the season. I think that tonight, Kemp will help bring this team a little closer to October.
Jason’s pick — Current streak 0: Cody Bellinger
I am going with the man that gave the Los Angeles Dodgers the team’s first run in last night’s game with a towering solo home run: Cody Bellinger.
Bellinger has some decent numbers against Zack Greinke in a decent amount of plate appearances. In 18 at-bats, Bellinger has six hits (two doubles and two home runs) and two RBIs. He has not walked, which indicates that Greinke attacks Bellinger and Bellinger attacks back.
While I do not expect another home run, it is the big hitters on the team that need to start coming up on a consistent basis if the Dodgers are truly going to hold firm in the National League West.
Bellinger is one of those hitters and he is going to work every single at-bat like it is his last and should get a two-seam fastball away that he lines into the gap.
