2013 NLCS (One Pitch, One Broken Rib)

Going into the 2013 NLCS the Los Angeles Dodgers were red hot, they dispatched the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS in four games hitting .333 and slugging seven home runs. The Dodgers outscored the Braves 26-14 and limited the Braves hitting to .214.

The hottest hitter of the series was Hanley Ramirez who had a .500 /.556 /1.063 /1.618 slash line and drove in six runs while tying a franchise record for extra base hits in a playoff series with six.

To beat the St. Louis Cardinals the Dodgers would need his bat. To beat the Dodgers the Cardinals figured out a way take out Ramirez.

In the first inning of game one with a man on first and Ramirez at the plate, Cardinals pitcher Joe Kelly pitched inside and Ramirez took a 95 mph fastball to the ribs.

Ramirez was able to stay in the game even being intentionally walked twice in what was ultimately a 13 inning loss. Ramirez was never the same, he had a rib fracture and it showed.

Ramirez slash line for the rest of the series was .133/.316 ./133 /.449 and only one RBI and zero home runs.

Without Ramirez being 100 percent the rest of the Dodgers lineup struggled against Cardinals pitching being shutout twice while hitting .211 as a team.

It marked their third NLCS loss in a row, the first time that happened in franchise history.
