Los Angeles Lakers: Why LeBron James will win his fifth MVP
By Jason Reed
2. LeBron James is catching every other MVP candidate at the right time
Another big reason why James will win the MVP award next season is that every other potential candidate is not primed for an MVP season, which theoretically should leave James as the only real candidate to win the award.
There is no other big storyline entering the year unless someone comes out of nowhere and has an insane season. The rest of the NBA’s elite players are in a situation in which it will be hard to rip the award away from James’ grasps.
Harden got his award and even a similar season won’t be enough to get him the award over James. Durant and Curry have to share the ball in Golden State and the overall dominance of the team will overlap any MVP chatter. Westbrook is going to have the same problem as last year and Giannis Antetokounmpo is a year or two away.
Anthony Davis is going to be LeBron’s biggest competition for the award and will put up a good fight with a monster season in New Orleans. However, with the West being so deep, the Pelicans could theoretically miss the postseason, which would derail Davis’ chances of winning the award.
Kawhi Leonard also has an outside shot if he goes to Toronto and has a stellar year but he is also coming off an injury and may not push it to the brink in a contract season.
