Houston Astros

With his free agent future still up in the air, it is unclear whether or not playing for a contending team will be a big requirement that Yasmani Grandal considers this offseason. Money definitely talks and we will get a better idea of what is more important to Grandal after he signs.

Either way, there are going to be some contending teams in the mix for Grandal, especially those that need help at the catcher position.

One of those teams is a team that Grandal is all-too-familiar with, the Houston Astros. Right now, Max Stassi and Chris Herrmann are the two catchers on the team’s depth chart. Grandal is undoubtedly better than both Stassi and Hermann and would benefit from hitting in an American League lineup as deep as the Astros’.

Grandal would also benefit from playing at Minute Maid Park, which might be around league average in terms of hitter friendliness, but is definitely easier to launch the ball out of than Dodger Stadium.

The Astros have no catching prospect in MLB Pipeline’s top 10 catchers list, however, do have Garrett Stubs. Stubs is the team’s 15th-ranked prospect and is probably going to get a shot at the big league roster this upcoming season.

Even with Stubs, the Astros would be better to go all-in on this current core and add a power hitting bat like Grandal, even though I hate is as a Dodger fan.
