Lakers Rumors: Don’t take Kevin Durant coming to LA lightly
By Jason Reed
Kevin Durant and Draymond Green’s altercation has the entire NBA world talking: one of the talking points being the Lakers rumors surrounding Durant.
While the dust has seemed to somewhat settle, the altercation between Draymond Green and Kevin Durant should have had every Golden State Warriors fan worried. For every Los Angeles Lakers fan, this was exciting due to the Lakers rumors that already exist around Durant.
If you have been living under an NBA rock, here is what happened. Green did not pass the ball to Durant during the final seconds of regulation against the Los Angeles Clippers and proceeded to out dribble himself to a loose ball.
This made Durant understandably frustrated as he was the go-to option with Stephen Curry out and Green really looked selfish. Heck, even in Green would have hit Klay Thompson I don’t think this would have been a big deal.
That led to an altercation which reportedly included Green challenging Durant about his impending free agency.
The two have seemed to make up, for now, but the bitter taste of what was said is still in the mouths of everyone connected to the Warriors. While it was a heat of the moment thing, this is obviously something that Green (and potentially others) have held onto.
The chances seem to be that Kevin Durant is leaving the Warriors, especially if he wins a third championship in Golden State. With Thompson becoming a free agent and Green the year following, this is the perfect time for Durant to use his player option and chase a new legacy elsewhere.
The best fit for Durant is the Los Angeles Lakers and the Lakers rumors around him should not be taken lightly. It has already been reported that LeBron James reached out to Durant last offseason about teaming up in LA.
While that has not yet happened yet, a Durant, LeBron partnership is great for both sides and is everything the NBA did not know it needed.
For Durant, this makes sense from a business and a legacy standpoint. Los Angeles naturally opens many doors on the business side of things that even Silicon Valley have not given Durant. Durant seems like a basketball player first, businessman second and the Lakers provide the best of both worlds.
From a legacy standpoint, playing with LeBron James would serve as a torch passing from James to Durant as the face of the NBA. While Durant is currently in his prime, he has always been in the shadow of James.
Winning two, or even three, titles with James and then going on to lead the Lakers to another title after he retires or leaves the city would be the perfect thing to cement Durant’s legacy. Even if he does not win, or even stay, after LeBron, the Lakers give him his best chance of winning up to his sixth ring.
There is also the possibility of the Lakers landing Anthony Davis. That would take some tricky maneuvering from Magic Johnson and the front office but it can be done. If that happens, the NBA would have it most talented threesome ever in LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis.
While it would not happen with those three all on the same team, those would be three great bets as the MVP finalists.
We have already seen that Durant is not afraid to join pre-established greatness and he is the last player to shy away from playing with LeBron, something that is becoming a trend in the NBA.
Thus, while nothing is for certain and we still have an entire season left to play, I would not take the Los Angeles Lakers rumors around Kevin Durant lightly. Especially after the altercation with Green.
