USC Football: What Kliff Kingsbury brings to the table
The USC Football Trojans have found their new offensive coordinator in former Texas Tech head coach, Kliff Kingsbury. Here is what to expect.
It sounds like the USC Football Trojans have agreed to terms with former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury to be their offensive coordinator.
Kingsbury is regarded as one of the top offensive minds in football. Before accepting the job at USC, Kingsbury was being contacted by NFL teams. Kingsbury coached some pretty good quarterbacks in college. He recruited and helped developed Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who took the NFL by storm. He also coached Johnny Manziel and Case Keenum in college.
In six seasons at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders ranked top three in the big 12 in total offense every year but this past year. At USC, it will be Kingsbury job to rebuild a boring and predictable offense.=
Kliff Kingsbury will bring the air raid system with him to USC. The air raid system is focused on passing a high percentage of the time. Kingsbury asks his quarterback to throw a lot of screens, slants and seam routes. You will also see a lot of timing routes, kind of like the 1999-2001 St. Louis Rams.
Another critical component to the offense is RPO action. I think with JT Daniels at helm for USC, Kingsbury will make some adjustments to his scheme. I think he will add more downfield route combinations to let Daniels use his arm talent.
With this system, you will see quite a bit of no-huddle offense to keep the defense off balance and quicking the pace of the game.
In the air raid offense there is usually not much running going on; but with the versatile running back Stephen Carr, Kingsbury will have to run the ball a lot more then he did in the past. Carr will have a lot of space to run with a four-wide offense and no tight ends
Kingsbury’s offense caters the quarterback and the receivers. I see JT Daniels putting up big numbers in this system, especially be able to throw the ball around the field a lot. Wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, Michael Pittman Jr., and Tyler Vaughns should be ready to have big years in this system.
I think in this system St. Brown has a chance to be one of the top receivers in the nation. He will be lining up in multiple receiving positions and will get a lot of targets from Daniels.
In the end, this was a hire Clay Helton had to make to get this USC Football program headed in the right direction. Kingsbury’s offense will score points lets see what Helton will do with the defensive side of the ball.
