Los Angeles Dodgers: Three minor leaguers that could impact 2019
By Jason Reed
1. Edwin Rios
Edwin Rios was one of the minor league players that the Los Angeles Dodgers had to add to the 40-man roster in order to avoid him being eligible in the Rule 5 Draft. The Dodgers drafted Rios in the sixth-round of the 2015 MLB Draft and the corner infielder has risen in the ranks since.
Right now, Rios currently ranks as the 15th-best prospect in the Dodgers organization, according to MLB Pipeline, and has proven all that he has needed to prove in the minor leagues.
Rios has proven that he is big league ready throughout his four years in the minor leagues. Overall, Rios is carrying a .302 batting average, .879 OPS, 64 home runs and 235 RBIs in 346 games played.
In 88 games in triple-A last season, Rios hit .304 with 25 doubles, 10 home runs and 55 RBIs. There really is not much more to prove in triple-A and Rios has accumulated quite the minor league resume.
Rios can play the corner outfield spots but is not a great fielder, so the Dodgers are likely going to want to play him at the corners. The only problem is that there really is not any room at third or first, making Rios’ come up a bit delayed.
However, if someone gets hurt, Rios should be the first guy the Dodgers call up. When that happens, Rios could show his advanced hitting skills and earn his way on the 25-man roster.
The team has the flexibility to either move Cody Bellinger to the outfield or even Justin Turner to second base if the second base situation is not sorted. It all depends on how Rios performs when given the call, but we think he will respond nicely.
