Los Angeles Chargers: Three early free agent options to consider
By Jason Reed
1. Ramon Foster, G
As we stated earlier, the Los Angeles Chargers offensive line was woefully dreadful this season. Philip Rivers was constantly being pressured and still played at a fairly high level. If the team just had a decent offensive line then imagine the things that Rivers could do.
This lack of blocking on the offensive line was surprising as well. The Chargers brought in center Mike Pouncey to help shore up the line last offseason and had young guards Dan Feeney and Forrest Lamp to rely on.
Feeney had a surprisingly decent rookie campaign and Lamp was the team’s second-round pick in 2017 and was set to be fully healthy in 2018. Lamp was regarded by many to be a first-round talent in that year’s draft, so he had to have been productive, right?
Wrong. Lamp played in just two games for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2018 and did not start in either. Feeney wasn’t good either as he was the worst pass-blocking starter on the Chargers with a pass-block rating of 44.1, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Los Angeles Chargers need help at guard and should make Ramon Foster their primary target. Although Foster is 33, he can be a huge help to the Chargers on a two or three-year deal.
He had the third-highest pass block rating on the Pittsburgh Steelers last season (84.5) and is a huge veteran presence to these other linemen. Foster had a better rating than any Charger as well.
