The 1970s

Boston 2-0

Surprisingly despite combining to play in five NBA Finals the Lakers and Celtics did not face off against each other in a single one. So it was up to other teams to carry on the rivalry between the two cities.

Only the Los Angeles Kings and Boston Bruins rose up to the challenge and faced off against each other in back to back seasons in 1976 and 1977; a quirk of the NHL’s old alignment where playoffs were about seeding and not geography.

The Kings lost both series being brought down by a veteran Bruins team that had won two Stanley Cups at the beginning of the decade and contest five in the decade.

For Kings fans, the most memorable moment of the playoffs came in 1976 when the Kings forced a game seven by winning game six in overtime thanks to a goal from forward Butch Goring.
