The Los Angeles Lakers are really going to get Kyrie Irving, aren’t they?

The speculation around the Los Angeles Lakers trading for Anthony Davis is extremely high and now Kyrie Irving joins that discussion.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been in pursuit of a second superstar before the team even added the first superstar. When LeBron James signed with the Lakers on the first day of the free agent period the search really got underway.

There have been countless stars in the rumor mill and all have fallen flat. The most recent notable name to be connected to the team is Anthony Davis, who has requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans and essentially has a marble path caved out all the way to Los Angeles for him.

It seems more than likely that the trade will happen and quite frankly it would be surprising if it didn’t happen. The rumblings of Davis teaming up with LeBron started when he signed with LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group.

After a dinner meeting and a trade request a month later, this seems to have been the plan all along.

However, a more surprising name has entered the discussion to give the Lakers a third superstar and arguably the most talented super team of all-time. A team that can defeat the Golden State Warriors. A team consisting of Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Irving was a shock because of his quick departure from Cleveland as he wanted to be “the guy” on his own team. However, after Irving admitted that he called James and apologized, realizing that leading a team is not as easy as he had thought, the speculation started.

There was then reports that Irving is open to teaming up with James and his latest comments essentially put the icing on the cake.

Kyrie Irving has backed out on committing to the Boston Celtics long-term despite verbally committing to the Celtics in the long-term to season ticket holders in October.

Ouch.

Now, there are two paths that Irving can take. The first is to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, and that is possible (you can read how here).

The other is to pack his bags and go slightly south to the Big Apple and team up with Kevin Durant on the New York Knicks. The Knicks now have two max cap spots after trading Kristaps Porzingis and has a core consisting of Dennis Smith Jr, Kevin Knox and potentially Zion Williamson.

While the Knicks always have the tendency to mess things up, this is a nice situation for both Irving and Durant and should be viewed as a very possible outcome.

However, the reports about James and the phone call the two had is causing smoke and where there is smoke there is fire. It helps that the Lakers would be without Lonzo Ball and most likely Rajon Rondo, opening the door wide open for a point guard to join the team.

Meanwhile, everything has to go right for the Knicks and they would realistically need Durant in order to lure Irving. If I expect any team to screw this up, it is the New York Knicks.

Next. Sleeper teams that can compete for Anthony Davis. dark

Kyrie Irving might actually join the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason. That is an insane and plausible thought that was absolutely laughable just a few months ago.
