Los Angeles Dodgers: Non-roster Spring Training invitees to watch
By Jason Reed
2. Dustin May, RHP
Dustin May had a very similar progression as Gavin Lux did last season. Both guys started in single-A Rancho and got called up to Tulsa at the same time. Both were huge contributors for the Quakes and continued that trend when they got the call up to double-A.
Unlike Lux, May was not as highly regarded entering the season. While May was still in the Dodgers’ top 30, more people knew of the former first-round pick, Lux, than they did May.
Then May went out and baffled minor league hitters with his stuff and started to develop legitimate MLB out pitches as well as the composure of a big leaguer. His name became a household name among Dodger fans when he was one of the most talked about prospects in the trade for Manny Machado.
May did not get traded and now sees himself one spot ahead of Lux as the 69th-ranked prospect in baseball. May is probably still almost two years away and the plan should be to have him be a September call-up in 2020.
He has great stuff but he does still look a little green at times.
However, nothing is better than getting rid of that then getting legitimate looks against big league level hitters. Thriving in Spring Training could give May the momentum to carry into the season and maybe be in the conversation for the starting rotation when Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu leave after this season.
