Los Angeles Rams: Jason Verrett might be worth the risk

Even with Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib the Los Angeles Rams should look to improve the secondary and have a low-risk, high-reward option available.

The Los Angeles Rams are undoubtedly looking to improve this offseason after coming up just short in Super Bowl LIII to the New England Patriots. While upgrades are needed, fans can at least take solace knowing that the core is young and the Rams should be right back in that position in the near future.

However, there are some players that will be hitting the open market and the Rams are going to have to either sign them or look for replacements. The biggest is on the defensive side of the ball, players such as Ndamukong Suh, Lamarcus Joyner and Dante Fowler Jr.

One area where the Rams are not losing much but still need to improve upon is in the secondary. The two top corners, Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, are both still set to suit up for the Rams next season.

The team could potentially lose Sam Shields, who was a low-risk, high-reward signing last offseason that showed some flashes of brilliance this season.

Even if the team does keep Shields it should be looking to bolster the secondary and deepen that depth chart at corner. If so, the Rams could explore another low-risk, high-reward option that could be just as cheap as Shields was last offseason.

It is another Los Angeles football player and a former first-round pick, Jason Verrett.

Verrett showed signs of being an elite corner early in his career that had every Los Angeles Charger fan excited. However, he has been just about as injury-prone as a player could be and virtually hasn’t played at all the last three seasons.

Verrett has played in five total games since the 2016 season. He played in four in 2016, just one in 2017 and did not play at all in 2018 after tearing his Achilles in training camp.

The Chargers, who have Casey Hayward, Desmond King and Trevor Williams, don’t need Verrett and probably don’t want to even bother using the roster spot on someone that obviously wasn’t working out.

That will leave him up for grabs and despite his potential, he is going to get virtually nothing with only five games played. Just like Sam Shields, the absolute max that Verrett might get this offseason is a one-year, $1 million deal.

If there are other teams in on Verrett I would go as high at $2.5 million. That is still nothing to an NFL team and won’t have any long-term repercussions being a one-year deal.

It is worth it as well because if Verrett is healthy then the Rams could get their true No. 1 corner for next season. He was a Pro Bowler in just his second season after all and is still only going to be 28 once the season rolls around.

Next. Taylor Rapp fits perfectly on the Rams. dark

And if he doesn’t perform to those standards that is completely fine, it is not like the Los Angeles Rams are only going to make that one move.
