Los Angeles Chargers: Trades that could flip the offseason on its head
By Jason Reed
One of the positions that the Los Angeles Chargers need to address this offseason is middle linebacker. The team could be losing Denzel Perryman to injury, who was hurt most of the last two years anyway. Adrian Phillips, who was a bit of a safety/linebacker hybrid, is also a free agent this offseason.
The Chargers should be prioritizing re-signing Phillips, who emerged as a big defensive piece and the best special teams player in the league last season. Phillips was an All-Pro for his efforts on the special teams’ side of things and was no slouch in the defensive side of the ball as well.
However, even with Phillips, the Los Angeles Chargers should be looking to add a middle linebacker in the offseason. While the team could use the draft to do so, there is a potentially low hanging fruit in Danny Trevathan.
Trevathan is coming off a great season with 102 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions. The Chicago Bears do not have a ton of cap space and would be better off trading Trevathan on the last year of his contract to save money rather than pinching pennies this offseason and simply losing him.
The Chargers might only get one year out of Trevathan and the two picks might seem like a lot. However, Trevathan is an elite defender that would make this great defense even better.
