Los Angeles Rams: Three trades that would flip the offseason on its head
By Jason Reed
Another deal that would be solely made for salary cap implications, the New York Jets trading Leonard Williams is a big possibility this offseason. New York Jets head coach, Greg Williams, did announce that the team was going to stay in a base 3-4 defense because it betters suits the team’s personnel, which seems to mean that Williams will stay in New York.
However, the Jets would be foolish to not trade Williams while they can and at least get something out of him. Remaining in a 3-4 might be a sign that he could stay, but he really shouldn’t if the Jets are smart about it.
Williams is one of the better defensive linemen in the game and is someone that is more than up to the task of replacing Ndamukong Suh in LA. Williams has played on the edge in the Jets’ 3-4 scheme but really should be an interior lineman that is surrounded by quicker defensive ends.
Los Angeles is the perfect place for Williams to play at nose tackle and thrive at doing so. Having Aaron Donald alongside him getting constantly doubled is only going to open the door for Williams, who will then be one of the quicker nose tackles in the game.
The Jets picked up the fifth year on Williams contract and thus the tackle has a $14.2 million cap hit this season. That is an insane number for a team in the Jets that is not even ready to contend yet.
Instead of paying him a lot of money and seeing him leave next offseason, the Jets can look to build for the future with two draft picks. The draft picks won’t be in the first, since he is on an expiring deal, but can help the team a whole lot.
That is a big salary to take on for the Rams but it is just a one-year deal and would be nearly identical to what the team did with Ndamukong Suh in the 2018 season.
