Los Angeles Dodgers: Biggest winners of Spring Training thus far
By Jason Reed
3. Hyun-Jin Ryu
We wanted to include someone like Justin Turner, who is also having a great spring, as the third member of this list but that is something we expect out of Turner. His job is already locked in and we all know that he is probably the best pure hitter on the Dodgers.
Hyun-Jin Ryu also has his job set in stone in the Dodgers starting rotation. The team has a deep rotation that needs figuring out but Ryu is essentially a lock because of his past performances and pedigree with the team.
However, what makes Ryu different than Turner and what makes him a winner this spring is that he is following up on his great 2018 campaign. It is safe to say that many Dodger fans didn’t really know what to expect out of Ryu.
When healthy, Ryu pitched like one of the best pitchers in the entire league. He often does not get the credit he deserves. Granted, he did just throw 82.1 innings last year but he had the third-best ERA for all starters with at least 80 innings pitched.
Ryu has not allowed a run in six innings pitched this spring while also striking out six. He has allowed just four hits and has not walked a single batter.
It might be unfair to expect Ryu to finish in the top three in ERA this season but he is showing thus far in spring that he is one of the most underrated and overlooked arms in baseball.
Don’t be surprised if Hyun-Jin Ryu is an all-star this season and is receives Cy Young votes by season’s end.
