Con: It could restrict the Los Angeles Rams from addressing a bigger area of need

Something that not many fans might think about when a potential target is named is the salary cap implications of the move. While most fans are familiar with the salary cap, most fans also do not stress about it as that is the front office’s job.

The truth of the matter is that the Rams do not have the most financial freedom. The team’s hands certainly are not tied but right now the team has around $8 million in cap space, per Spotrac.

Matthews certainly is not going to get what he got in Green Bay but it is not absurd to think that the veteran asks for a two-year, $10 million contract as his base offer. It is hard seeing Matthews getting anything less than $3.5 million per year, which is still almost half of the team’s salary cap space.

While outside linebacker certainly is a need that the Rams should look to address, it is not the biggest area of need. The team would be better off getting a traditional inside linebacker and also needs to look to replace Ndamukong Suh and add youth to the offensive line.

Perhaps the Rams would be better spending that money on an established defensive tackle or inside backer and use the 2019 NFL Draft for an outside linebacker. If there is nobody else the team loves then sure, go after Matthews.

However, if there is any other player that the Los Angeles Rams are interested in, Matthews might be a luxury they cannot have.
