Los Angeles Lakers: Pros and cons of pursuing DeMarcus Cousins
By Jason Reed
DeMarcus Cousins is a natural fit on the Los Angeles Lakers this summer with many thinking that the Lakers will pursue Boogie as their second star.
Even before the Los Angeles Lakers signed LeBron James the team has been in pursuit of two superstars in order to contend for an NBA Title. Many fans have been upset with what this had led to, but it has openly been the Lakers’ plan since Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka took over.
Nothing has gone the Lakers’ way when it comes to landing a superstar, which might lead the team in DeMarcus Cousins‘ direction.
An ESPN panel predicted Cousins to go the Lakers after his lone season with the Golden State Warriors, which does make sense. The Lakers are desperate to save face and get a polarizing second star and Cousins wants to be paid and contend.
This, like any move in sports, has natural pros and cons that come along with it.
Pro: It adds a second star without sacrificing the young core
One of the potential hangups of making a trade for a superstar, such as Anthony Davis, is having to trade the young core. While the front office seemingly doesn’t seem to bat an eye, the fanbase has grown more supportive of this young core than LeBron James and it would upset a good portion of the fandom.
On the flip side, signing a superstar allows the Los Angeles Lakers to keep the young core intact to go along with the newly-formed superstar duo. This is huge for the Lakers as it allows the team to maintain its depth instead of making one of these superstar trades and then surrounding LeBron and Davis with a bunch of minimum guys.
Having two All-NBA-caliber players is nice but the Lakers will still never win if the roster is not as deep as it should be.
