Here the Los Angeles Lakers are utilizing LeBron’s old team and old teammate in order to land Anthony Davis. There is a reason to doubt if the Cavaliers would help the Lakers out in this trade but it does get the team some nice pieces in return.

Let’s start with why this makes sense for the New Orleans Pelicans and it really only makes sense if the Pelicans have a certain motive. With two talented players in Jrue Holliday and Julius Randle on the roster, there is a possibility that the Pelicans want to stay competitive and don’t want to completely overhaul the roster.

This would be a nice blend of accomplishing both as the team would be getting an all-star caliber player in Kevin Love alongside the Lakers’ best young asset in Brandon Ingram. J.R. Smith can be a solid bench shooter for the team in 2019 or the team can waive him and only have to pay $3.8 million of his salary next year.

That provides cap relief to go sign an impact free agent as well. It creates cap by sending Solomon Hill to the Cavs, joined by Kyle Kuzma and the Lakers’ 2019 first-round pick.

It might not seem like that big of a return but the Cavaliers should be interested in doing what the Los Angeles Clippers did with Blake Griffin and get Love’s long-term contract off the books to make it easier to build in the future.

When you look at it that way, a package that has a young talented power forward, as well as another selection in the top-10, is a great return.

And as for the Lakers, this move would be better for the team as it would keep the team from having to trade all three members of the young core and the pick just for Davis. It is not much better, but it is better nonetheless.
