Los Angeles Dodgers: Who is going to set the home run record?
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers are hosting the Cincinnati Reds in a Wednesday afternoon game going for a sweep and some home run history.
The Los Angeles Dodgers‘ fortunes have quickly turned and the team has been as streaky as it could have been to start the season. After an 8-2 start, the team followed up with a six-game losing streak and are now in the midst of a three-game winning streak.
A win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday would not only give the team its fourth win in a row but would give them a series sweep over the team they made a massive trade with this past winter.
A sweep is not the only thing in the cards for the Los Angeles Dodgers as the team has the chance to make history on Wednesday. If the Boys in Blue can muscle a home run it will be their 32nd straight home game with a home run, which would tie the MLB record.
We would have to wait until April 26, when the Dodgers host the Pittsburgh Pirates, to see if the team can set the new record, assuming they tie to today, of course.
We think the Dodgers are going to tie the record. It is an afternoon game and the ball is going to be flying out of the yard. The question then becomes not if the Dodgers are going to do it, but who is going to do it first.
As part of our Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak series, here is our pick for who will leave the yard on Wednesday.
Jason’s pick (Current streak: 1): Cody Bellinger
Who else is going to help the Dodgers tie an MLB record other than the guy that has been red-hot to start the year and arguably the best hitter in all of baseball? Cody Bellinger has been so insane to start the year that it feels like we are living in his video game career mode and he just turned down the difficulty.
Bellinger leads the National League in batting average, home runs and trails Christian Yelich by two RBIs with Yelich having a great showing against the St. Louis Cardinals and Bellinger sitting a game to rest his knee.
He leads in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and hits. This is not just a flash in the pan, either. Bellinger’s approach at the plate is noticeably better and he is using all of his tools to get on base, not just his power.
We will see that power on full display today against Sonny Gray. Gray will leave a fastball over the plate and Bellinger will send it soaring into the visitor’s bullpen for his 10th home run of the year.
The fans’ pick (Current streak: 3): N/A
With last night’s game ending at 10 o’clock and today’s game starting on people’s lunch breaks, we were unable to get a Beat the Streak selection from the fans.
