All signs are pointing to Ty Lue becoming the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, repeating the trend of the team hiring former players as the head coach.

The Los Angeles Lakers appear to be finishing their search for a new head coach. This past Friday the Phoenix Suns announced the hiring of Monty Williams as their head coach. Williams had been interviewed by the Lakers twice, with him out of the running media focused on another coaching candidate.

Tyronn Lue, who previously coached the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James, is supposedly now the frontrunner for the job. If Lue is chosen for the job he would become the 27 permanent head coach in team history and he would be the third consecutive coach to have also played for the team.

Lue was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1998 but was acquired in a draft night trade by the Lakers. Lue played on the team from 1998 to 2001, winning two championships with the team before he left as a free agent in the summer of 2001.

Throughout their rich and storied history, the Lakers have looked to former players to coach their team. If Lue is hired it remains to be seen if he can be the rare player to add to his legacy through coaching as well.
