Los Angeles Lakers: Trading for Kyle Lowry would be atrocious
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Lakers have reported interest in Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry when really there should be no interest whatsoever.
The Los Angeles Lakers front office is going to be so desperate to save face and add some sort of second star to the roster that the team might end up making some pretty bad moves this offseason.
One of those bad moves that the Lakers might make, and actually have reported interest in, is trading for veteran Toronto Raptors point guard, Kyle Lowry.
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in Lowry if the Raptors are unable to re-sign Kawhi Leonard. At that point, the Raptors should absolutely be shopping Lowry as the team will no longer be a contender and need to add pieces for the future.
While it might make sense for the Raptors to trade Lowry, it makes absolutely no sense for the Lakers to trade for him, under any circumstance. If the front office were to make this deal, the fans would definitely be justified in being outraged, like most moves the front office has made.
There are so many negatives about trading for Lowry with no real positives to take away other than him being a big name that can occasionally have a good playoff performance.
He is 33 years old and is coming off the worst season statistically of this decade, despite him still being an all-star. And while he has the occasional big game in the playoffs, he is as inconsistent as it comes when it really matters.
Lowry is also on a one-year contract, which should make this a no-go from the start. Some would argue this is a good thing as it keeps the Lakers flexible and makes the team capable of bringing in, say, Anthony Davis the following offseason.
And while it does mean his price is lower, the Lakers are still going to have to give up a package centered around one of the young stars. Whether it’s Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram or Kyle Kuzma, the Lakers will have to trade one of them, alongside a young role player like Moritz Wagner, to get Lowry.
So the team would be trading one of the bright spots of the future in a deal that underestimates their value just to bring in a big name that doesn’t really make the team a contender. That is awful.
Not to mention that his $33.2 million salary next season would tie up a big chunk of the salary cap, making it harder to fill out the rest of the roster.
If these rumors about the Los Angeles Lakers being interested in Kyle Lowry are true then the front office needs to look in the mirror and recalibrate. If these rumors actually lead to a trade, well, I don’t blame any fans for losing hope.
