Los Angeles Dodgers: Looking for fifth win in a row
By Jason Reed
After defeating the New York Mets in an entertaining Memorial Day showdown, the Los Angeles Dodgers look for their fifth win in a row on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Dodgers started a seven-game homestand exactly how the doctor ordered by coming from behind and defeating the New York Mets, 9-5. Many expected the game to be low scoring due to the Jacob deGrom–Clayton Kershaw matchup, but it was anything but that.
Both deGrom and Kershaw pitched well. Kershaw recorded yet another quality start and continued his trend of throwing 6-7 innings and allowing 2-3 runs. This time, Kershaw did as bad as you could do to get a quality start, allowing three runs in six innings.
deGrom allowed just two runs but had to be yanked after five innings because the Dodgers do what they normally do: inflate the pitch count. deGrom was at 105 pitches after five and then the Mets bullpen imploded.
The Dodgers scored six runs in the sixth inning and added another in the eighth for good measure to turn a productive Jacob deGrom start into another loss for the Mets, something that has been a trend for the franchise.
The great offensive showing was great for our Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak series as every single player in the starting lineup, including Clayton Kershaw, recorded at least one hit. David Freese recorded a hit in his one pinch-hit appearance and Matt Beaty was the only position player to not get a hit.
Thus, our streak continues and we look to build on it on Tuesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers look to build on a four-game winning streak. Here is who we think can provide at least one base hit yet again on Tuesday.
Jason’s pick (Current streak: 4): Alex Verdugo
Alex Verdugo did not have a tremendous game on Monday but did add to the scoring barrage as his sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth was the final of six runs in the inning. Overall, Verdugo went 1-4 on the night with a single.
Verdugo has been impressive in his rookie season as he is still hitting .309 but it has been quite some time since we have seen home run pop out of his bat. Verdugo has not homered at all in the month of May and last homered on April 25.
Verdugo is due for a big hit, even though he is facing a southpaw on the mound. Despite Verdugo being a left-handed hitter himself, he is actually hitting better against southpaws with a .33 batting average on the year.
Expect that to translate on Tuesday and for Verdugo to drive the ball the other way, which he loves to do, and barely escape the yard for his first home run of the month.
