Honorable Mention: Number 16

A lot of good players have worn the number 16. The Dodgers have passed the number among NLCS hero and current broadcaster Rick Monday, Japanese pioneer Hideo Nomo, and recently  Andre Ethier wore it for his entire 12 season Dodgers career.

Someday perhaps Pau Gasol‘s number 16 may rise among the Lakers retired numbers. When the Lakers traded for him 2008 it led to three straight NBA Finals appearances and back to back titles in 2009-10.

The only quarterback to lead a Los Angeles team to a Super Bowl win was Jim Plunkett, who wore 16 while leading the 1983 Raiders to a title, Jared Goff the Rams current QB may join Plunkett some day.

The only UCLA player to win a Heisman Trophy as college football’s best player was Gary Beban, who number 16 on Saturdays at the Coliseum.

Some very good players have worn number 16, but it is not quite as great as the rest.
