Los Angeles Dodgers looking to carry offensive momentum
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers finally had the offensive outburst that fans had been waiting for with a definitive 9-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have not been tremendous offensively in the month of June and that has led to a month that has not been bad but had been mediocre.
Being the most talented team in baseball and having the best pitching staff in the league has still led the Dodgers to a 10-6 record in the month of June that easily could be a 13-3 record.
There were no offensive worries for the Dodgers on Tuesday night, however, as the team came out and not only slugged home runs but manufactured runs as well, which is a much better sign than having several solo shots.
Capped off by a seventh-inning grand slam off the bat of Enrique Hernandez, the Dodgers scored nine runs against the San Francisco Giants and Clayton Kershaw lowered his season ERA under three with seven scoreless innings.
It was the kind of dominating win that was happening on a near-nightly basis in the month of May. While we would be spoiled to expect this every night, it is refreshing to see after the team scored just two runs on Monday.
The Dodgers are obviously looking to carry that momentum into Wednesday with Rich Hill on the mound. Hill has quietly been elite this year with a 2.60 ERA and is easily the most entertaining pitcher to watch in baseball with his pitch selection, quirky delivery and antics.
As part of our Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak series, this is who we think will get at least one base hit to help carry that momentum into tonight’s game.
Jason’s pick (Current streak: 1): Enrique Hernandez
We are banking on the idea that the grand slam will be a launching point for Hernandez to get out of this disastrous dry spell that has plagued him over the last month.
When Hernandez is at his best, the Dodgers offense is even more terrifying as it adds another right-handed bat that can do damage. When he is cold, especially with Corey Seager and A.J. Pollock out, it makes the bottom four bats in the order leave much more to be desired.
While we don’t expect Hernandez to be red-hot in the coming weeks, it would be nice to see him come back to form and shake off some of that hard-hit bad luck that has been haunting him the last several weeks.
The Giants are sending a southpaw to the mound in Drew Pomeranz and then send Madison Bumgarner on Thursday.
Hernandez will get the start against the left-handed Pomeranz and we all know that he sees MadBum better than anyone else in baseball.
This could be the start of a hot streak with two favorable matchups for Hernandez. Or, it could simply be one positive blip on the radar surrounded by countless negatives. Let’s hope for the former.
