Los Angeles Dodgers: Looking for the sweep over Miami
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been exceptional at home this season and have continued that trend with two wins over the Miami Marlins.
The Los Angeles Dodgers started the second half of the MLB season with a tough seven-game road trip against the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. Not only are those tough East Coast teams to beat on the road but they also had to play in some soggy conditions in both cities.
The Dodgers went 4-3 on the road trip and easily could have gone 6-1 without some key errors and slight mistakes against the Phillies. Regardless, walking away from that trip with a positive record, even if it is just by one game, is ideal.
Los Angeles then returned home for a five-game homestand, starting with a three-game series against the last-place Miami Marlins. The Marlins are a team that the Dodgers should definitely sweep, especially at home, and so far the Boys in Blue are coming through.
The team has won both of the first two games, although it has not been easy. The first game saw the offense plate just two runs on a fielder’s choice and error. The second game saw Clayton Kershaw dominant and the bullpen blow a six-run lead, although Matt Beaty came to the rescue with a three-run bomb.
The Dodgers are now staring a sweep right in the eyes as they send Walker Buehler out for the last game of the series. Going for the Marlins is promising young pitcher Jordan Yamamoto, who has a 1.59 ERA in six starts thus far this season.
Yamamoto is yet to allow more than two earned runs in any of his six starts this season. The Dodgers are looking to change that and as part of our Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak series, this is who we think can contribute with at least one base hit.
Jason’s pick (Current streak: 4): Cody Bellinger
Cody Bellinger has not been quite himself in this series. While he has still gotten on base, the Marlins have done a good job of pitching to him and limiting the damage.
Bellinger is 1-4 in the series, which might not seem all that bad, but all three of his outs have been strikeouts, which is unlike the 2019 version of Bellinger. His only hit of the series was a dugout flare into center field that dropped for a single. He has not had any hard-hit balls yet this series.
That is bound to change and Bellinger has a great matchup against a young right-handed pitcher. Although Yamamoto has been great thus far this year, Bellinger has hit inexperienced righties extremely well this year and is hitting righties overall at a .341 clip.
Perhaps a Bellibomb is coming. Maybe it is a multi-hit game with several hard-hit balls. Regardless, Cody Bellinger is due for a big game.
