Jason’s Take: Rams over Chargers

As a fan of the Los Angeles Chargers, it pains me to say that the Los Angeles Rams will once again be the superior team in LA. And no, I am not talking about how the Rams actually have a big fanbase in LA, while the Chargers are probably the fifth-most popular team in their own city.

The gap this year is smaller than last year, I should add. What shrank that gap is the question marks around Todd Gurley and the realization in the playoffs last year that this offense really needs him to take that extra step.

They can succeed without him but they will not get over that hump against other playoff teams without him or someone that can at least be 70 percent of what he brings to the table. The offense relies heavily on play-action passes, but without Gurley, the defense does not have to respect the run as much.

If the Chargers were 100 percent heading into the year then I probably would have called it a draw. However, Derwin James missing 3-4 months, Russell Okung is out for who knows how long and the fact that Melvin Gordon might not even be a Charger takes away the appeal of a tie.

I think both teams are still going to be playoff teams and might even end up having a similar record. However, that road will be slightly easier for the Los Angeles Rams.
