Los Angeles Chargers fall to Detroit Lions in heartbreaking fashion
By Hil Lopez
The Los Angeles Chargers were unable to start the year off with a 2-0 record and instead fell to the Detroit Lions on the road in Week 2.
The Los Angeles Chargers visited Ford Field on Sunday in hopes of starting the season 2-0. Unfortunately, they were not able to come away with the victory as they fell 13-10 to the Detroit Lions.
As they were driving towards scoring position, Philip Rivers threw a pass in the corner of the end zone intended for Keenan Allen and it was intercepted by Detroit cornerback Darius Slay. The Lions got the ball and on the ensuing possession, got the first down, and ran out the clock to end the game.
Rivers threw for 293 yards, but no touchdowns and the all-important pick in the end zone. Austin Ekeler ran for 66 yards and a touchdown and also caught 6 passes for 67 yards.
His running mate Justin Jackson had 7 rushes for 59 yards and 1 catch for 5 yards. Keenan Allen was outstanding as well as he caught 8 passes for 98 yards on an absurd 15 targets.
There were a bunch of turnovers in this game and special team miscues, especially in the second half as the Lions had two interceptions and the Chargers had two missed field goals, a fumble and an interception.
Out of all those miscues, the one that hurt the most was the fumble by Ekeler as it was in the red zone and would have put the Chargers up by double digits.
Even with that, the Chargers had numerous opportunities to push the lead, but fill in kicker Ty Long, who is also the punter, missed two field goals. They sorely missed field goal kicker Michael Badgley and hope to get him back soon.
On the defensive side, former Panther Thomas Davis once again led the Bolts in tackles with twelve and cornerback Casey Hayward and safety Rayshawn Jenkins each picked off a pass from Stafford. Nevertheless, it was not enough to propel the Chargers to victory.
Next week the Chargers will face off against Deshaun Watson and the Texans at home looking to rebound from this heartbreaking defeat.
