Los Angeles Chargers come up short against Houston Texans
By Hil Lopez
Both the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans entered Sunday with 1-1 records, and now, the Chargers have a 1-2 record for the second straight year.
The Los Angeles Chargers came up just short in their second home game of the season, 27-20 against the Texans. Like last game, when they were ahead against the Lions at half time, they again let a lead slip away against the Texans in the 2nd half. They were up 17-7 and it slowly went all downhill from there.
The Texans were able to march down the field in the second half and score 20 seconds half points in a row thanks to two long touchdown passes from Deshaun Watson to his tight ends to take a 27-17 lead.
After a field goal by the Chargers cut the lead to 7, they had one more chance to tie the game up at the end. Unfortunately, Philip Rivers‘ heave in the end zone fell short on 4th and 15 thus ending the game.
Deshaun Watson racked up a total of 351 passing yards today and three touchdowns in the comeback win. All three were to his tight ends: Jordan Akins and Darren Fells.
DeAndre Hopkins was pretty neutralized going against Casey Hayward in this tilt, only catching 6 balls for 67 yards without a score. They were stuffed on the ground by the Chargers, rushing for 39 total yards for the whole game.
On the other side, Philip Rivers threw for 318 yards and touchdowns on 46 attempts. Austin Ekeler was not able to get much going on the ground rushing 9 times for 36 yards while his teammate Justin Jackson had 5 rushes for 26 yards.
On the receiving side, Keenan Allen had an absurd 13 catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets. His counterpart Mike Williams had 3 receptions for 45 yards and Ekeler had 7 for 45 yards as well.
The Chargers seemed to really miss their star safety Derwin James throughout this game. Their replacement safety could not keep up with the tight ends of the Texans as they were a huge part of the reason why the Texans came up victorious in this game.
Though they are a pretty solid defense team, the Chargers weakness is their secondary which is being thoroughly exposed at the moment without James.
Luckily, next week the Chargers face a get right matchup against the pitiful Miami Dolphins on the road, who was yet again blown out this week, 31-6 by the Dallas Cowboys.
