UCLA Football: Bruins smacked by Beavers at home, 48-31
By Jamaal Artis
The UCLA football team was unable to get its second win of the year on Saturday and was thoroughly defeated by the Oregon State Beavers.
One first-quarter deficit was the margin of error the UCLA Football Bruins could not afford. Down 21-0 to the Oregon State Beavers after one quarter doomed the Bruins to their second consecutive 1-5 start.
Beavers quarterback Jake Luton threw a career record five touchdown passes against the Bruins giving the Beavers their second win of the season and pushing the Bruins to new lows in the Chip Kelly era.
First Quarter Disaster
The Bruins allowed the game to get out of hand almost immediately letting the Beavers go 75 yards in 2 minutes on their very first possession of the game.
When the Bruins took over inexplicably Kelly went for it on 4th and 1 on his own 34 and as they have all season the Bruins failed to convert giving the Beavers short yardage to go up 14-0.
Things went from bad to worst when the Beavers recovered a surprise onside kick which Luton converted a 27-yard touchdown pass. The Bruins were down 21-0 before the first quarter started and never recovered.
Same Ol’ Defense
It’s hard to know if the Bruins lack of defense is due to scheme or lack of talent, What has been consistent all season though is that the Bruins stink at stopping the pass. Luton had his best game of the year throwing his five touchdowns and running for another one.
The Bruins had no answer for wide receiver Isiah Hodgins who made a team-high 10 catches and three touchdowns. But it wasn’t just Hodgins who gave the Bruins problems, they were bitten by the big play as they gave up a touchdown in the air for 75 yards and a 45-yard pass set up the Beavers first touchdown scored.
It was much the same for a team that has been giving 10 plus yards through the air per attempt, and it doesn’t look like it will change any time soon.
Chip Kelly is on the hot seat
With every game the worse the Bruins play the more questions will arise if the game has passed Chip Kelly behind. His Saturday night counterpart the Beavers coach Jonathan Smith was hired the same year as Kelly, and after two seasons is 4-13 at Oregon State.
Chip Kelly in his two seasons is 4-14, you could have bet all of the U.S. currency in circulation that no one would have foreseen Kelly and Smith having the same record.
This is the lowest point in the UCLA football program under Chip Kelly and there is no sign that it will start moving up.
