Los Angeles Dodgers: Three players who are stuck in between this winter
By Jason Reed
2. Edwin Rios
Edwin Rios did not get a lot of time with the big-league club in 2019 but when he was given his opportunity he did shine. The smooth-swinging left-handed corner infielder showed noticeable pop in his bat and that he is someone who is going to carve out a role in Major League Baseball.
Rios appeared in 28 games for the Dodgers but only eclipsed 56 plate appearances. He recorded 13 hits, 10 runs, nine walks, four home runs and eight RBIs. He finished his small sample size with a .277 batting average and 1.010 OPS.
He showcased his power in the minors as well as he hit .270 with 31 home runs and 91 RBIs in 104 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The one concern with Rios is his strikeouts. He struck out in 34.4 percent of his plate appearances in Triple-A and 37.5 percent in the MLB. However, he is a young bat and in 2019, that is not so awful and is manageable.
The problem for Rios is that there is simply nowhere to put him. Justin Turner and Max Muncy are likely going to start at the corners this year with Matt Beaty being the left-handed bat off of the bench to play first base.
With the surplus of left-handed bats, the Dodgers are likely more inclined to add a righty to the bench. However, Rios has proven that he is big-league ready and is no longer a Triple-A player.
Perhaps this leads to Rios being involved in a trade of some sort to address another area of the team.
