Russell Martin: B-

36-year-old Russell Martin returned to the Dodgers, the team that drafted him, in a much different role than when he first joined the team. This time around, Martin filled in as a backup catcher. Martin didn’t hit much, posting just a .667 OPS on the season, but he made up for it with veteran savvy.

Martin ably handled the pitching staff when it was his turn to catch. Dodger pitchers had a 2.91 ERA when Martin caught in his 486 innings behind the plate. Martin was best when he found himself on the pitching mound, throwing four shutout innings to post a 0.00 ERA over the season.

Martin saved his best for last driving in four runs in Game 3 of the NLDS, which was the last Dodger win of the season. With Freese’s retirement, if Martin comes back he will be the elder statesmen on the team providing veteran leadership once again.
