Austin Barnes: D+

Austin Barnes inherited the starting catcher position when Yasmani Grandal refused a one year offer from the front office and went to the Milwaukee Brewers. Before the summer was over Barnes would find himself in Triple-A losing his job to rookie Will Smith.

Barnes struggled mightily at the plate with a slash line of .203/.293/.340/633, among the Dodgers position players who played 50 games, Barnes was dead last in each category. Barnes’ defense could not save him as he was ninth in errors with six and 20th in wild pitches while catching with 15th.

Barnes did not return to the team until rosters were expanded in September and he was left off the postseason roster just a year after starting game one of the 2108 World Series.

Overall Barnes’s lack of productivity at the plate and average defense doomed him to a backup role in 2019 and perhaps the future.
