4. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates are our dark horse pick for signing Hyun-Jin Ryu as most baseball fans probably would not consider them to even have a chance of signing any big-name free agents this winter.

For the most part, the Pirates do not like to spend like the bigger market teams in the league but there comes a point in time where you feel like you have to spend and I think the Pirates are at that point in their timeline.

The Pirates do have some young pieces to get excited for in the future and some already established talented players as well. Quite frankly, the one thing they need is starting pitching and they need that ace pitcher that can lock things down atop the rotation.

They are not going to be players for the bigger names on the market, such as Stephen Strasburg and Gerrit Cole, so I could absolutely see them settling on the third option in Hyun-Jin Ryu and signing him to a longer contract that pays more without such a high AAV.

I see the Pirates offer being somewhere around six years and $120 million, which probably will be where most of these teams fall on Ryu.

That is not enough to completely tie the Pirates’ hands in the future and should be enough to get their ace for the time being. This is a team that is desperate for pitching and I think they spend when maybe they shouldn’t.
