Los Angeles Chargers squeak by the Bears with some help
By Hil Lopez
The Los Angeles Chargers are known for losing games in the most absurd ways. This week it was different, as they won the game in an absurd way.
The Los Angeles Chargers typically have bad luck in losing close games, whether it be at home or on the road. Fortunately for them, they were able to hold on today in a nail biter 17-16 against the Bears on their home turf. This was due to the fact that the Bears kicker Eddy Piniero shanked a winning field goal attempt wide left at the end.
He had made three out of four field goals before the game-winning attempt.
The Chargers came out on top despite the fact that they gave up 162 yards rushing, (135 to David Montgomery), and were thoroughly outgained in total yards. A key part of their win was their defense in which they bent but did not break in the red zone.
They gave up numerous field goals, but no touchdowns, which aided them and ultimately made a difference.
Additionally, they were able to put a ton of pressure on Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky as he lost a fumble, threw a pick and was sacked four times during the game.
The Chargers did not do much on offense as they only had three scoring drives. However, they were able to make them meaningful.
Philip Rivers threw for only 201 yards today and had one touchdown as well as one interception thrown.
Keenan Allen, who was a game-time decision due to a hamstring injury, had 7 catches for 53 yards on a game-high ten targets. His counterpart Mike Williams had three grabs for 69 yards to lead the team.
The Los Angeles Chargers run game was stagnant tonight as they only had 36 yards rushing as a team.
Luckily, both running backs scored in the game as Melvin Gordon had a touchdown run and Austin Ekeler had the lone touchdown catch from Rivers.
The Chargers boosted their record to 3-5 and still remain in the playoff picture in the AFC.
Next week, they will take on the Green BayPackers at home, who beat the Chargers’ division rival, the Kansas Chiefs 31-24 on the road Sunday night.
