The UCLA football team had yet another promising win against a ranked team this year and took down the now-unranked Arizona State Sun Devils.

The UCLA Football Bruins have done something few fans would have expected when they started the 2019 season. The Bruins are on a winning streak thanks to a 42-32 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils at the Rose Bowl.

The Bruins rushed out to a 42-10 lead to start the fourth quarter before the Sun Devils made it interesting by scoring 22 points in the quarter, but it was too little too late. With the Bruins win, they are improbably just one game behind in the PAC-12 South division standings.

Ground Game

For the second game in a row, the Bruins gained 200 plus yards on the ground. The Bruins rushed 57 times for 217 yards to grind down the Sun Devils defense. The big rusher again was Joshua Kelley, who rushed 164 yards and a career-best four touchdowns.

By using the ground game effectively the Bruins dominated time of possession, holding on to the ball for 38 minutes compared to the Sun Devils’ 21 minutes. It was Kelley who finished four of the first five touchdown drives averaging 4.8 yards per rush. If Kelley is back to being healthy expect the Bruins to continue using the ground game to get wins.

Still losing the ball

The Bruins fumbled the ball three times in the game. twice giving the Sun Devils’ short-yardage in the fourth quarter allowing the Sun Devils to get back in the game after they scored touchdowns.

Bruins quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson had two fumbles, giving him 12 turnovers on the season in just seven games. As a team, the Bruins have 14 turnovers and a -4 turnover margin for the season tied for 100th in the nation. The Bruins continued inability to hold onto the ball will be a detriment going forward especially when the offense falters.

Quote of the Day

"“But the best thing that I can say is that the baby Bruins are growing up and it is fun to see.”-Chip Kelly"

When the Bruins were struggling early in the season Kelly would discuss the youth of the team, some saw that as an excuse but now that his “Baby Bruins” are developing fans and pundits can see the progress the Bruins are making.

Moving Forward

The UCLA football team hosts the Colorado Buffaloes next at home with a real chance to keep the streak going and possibly turn their game with the Utah Utes into a showdown the following week. After a terrible start, it’s looking like a good time to be a Bruins fan.
