Los Angeles Dodgers: Potential relief pitcher trade targets
By Jason Reed
3. Yusmeiro Petit
Yusmeiro Petit had a really good under-the-radar season in 2019. He ranked high in several important categories for a starting pitcher and his veteran presence, and the low amount of risk it would be adding him to the bullpen, make him a valuable trade target worth pursuing.
Petit ranked third in BB/9 among relievers last season at 1.08, which is important as walks are a recipe for disaster for relief pitchers. He finished 45th among relievers in left-on-base percentage with a solid 81.4 percent and ranked seventh among relief pitchers with a .213 batting average on balls in play.
He did not strike out a lot of batters and does not induce a ton of ground balls, but in a pitcher-friendly park such as Dodger Stadium, there is no reason to think that this style won’t be successful. He finished the season with a 2.71 ERA.
So why would the Oakland Athletics be open to trading him? Well, like the small-market Reds that we already mentioned, the Athletics would jump on the chance to trade a veteran reliever for a prospect, even if that prospect is not elite, in a heartbeat.
Petit only has one year left under contract, which is the perfect double positive of him not being a long-term risk for the Dodgers if things do not pan out while also making it easier for Oakland to part ways.
Petit has good stuff and throughout his entire career, he has never been worse than an average MLB reliever. With the potential upside and the numbers he put together last season, this would be a great trade for the Los Angeles Dodgers to make.
