Los Angeles Dodgers: Three trade fits from the American League Central
By Jason Reed
1. Cheslor Cuthbert
The Kansas City Royals are no strangers to doing business with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In January of 2018, the Royals dealt southpaw reliever Scott Alexander and Jake Peter to the Dodgers in a three-team deal.
Alexander was one of the best groundball pitchers in the league at the time and gave the Dodgers a much-needed left-handed presence in the bullpen. While things have not quite worked out how the Dodgers would have wanted, the acquisition still holds up and makes sense.
That Alexander trade came out of nowhere as there were no real reports around the deal possibly taking place beforehand. This could be a similar situation where the Royals are willing to deal Cheslor Cuthbert at the right price.
Cuthbert is the corner-infield right-handed bat that would replace David Freese, who retired after this season. Theoretically, the Dodgers could rely on using Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor at the corner spots, but they will be elsewhere so frequently and with injuries being natural it does not hurt to add more depth.
The important part about Cuthbert, othre than the fact that he plays the corner infield positions, is that he hits left-handed pitching well. Cuthbert hit .317 with a .937 OPS last season against southpaws, slugging five home runs in 82 at-bats. He hit four home runs against right-handed pitchers in 227 at-bats.
