9. Los Angeles awarded 2028 Summer Olympic Games

On September 13th, 2017 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally awarded the city of Los Angeles the right to host the 34th Summer Olympic Games. The announcement was a mere formality as Los Angeles was the only city in the bidding after the Los Angeles bidding team had agreed to drop their bid for the 2024 games so that the city of Paris could host.

Both cities were confirmed on the same day giving Los Angeles 11 years to prepare for the international sporting community to descend on the city. The announcement meant that Los Angeles would join Paris and London as cities that had hosted the Summer Olympics three times.

The bid included the use of venues used in 1932 and 1984 when Los Angeles last hosted and would incorporate new venues and locales all across Southern California. To accommodate all the expected international visitors Los Angeles will be creating infrastructure improvements to Los Angeles International Airport and the Metro Subway lines.

The winning bid solidified the idea that Los Angeles has become a global city and a mecca for sports.
