7. Sparks win 2016 WNBA title

The Los Angeles Sparks won the 2016 WNBA title their third in franchise history on a late shot beating the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in what is arguably the best Finals in league history. The Sparks won Game Five when league MVP Nneka Ogwumike made a shot a with 3.1 seconds left to clinch the series and the title.

The championship series was a great showcase for two of the league’s most talented teams. Like Game Five, the first game of the series went down to the wire and a buzzer-beater by the Sparks Alana Beard got the series rolling.

The Sparks Candace Parker was named series MVP after she put up 29 points and 12 rebounds in the series finale. The title was a far cry for the franchise which had to seek new ownership in January of 2014 when their owners could no longer meet payroll obligations. The team was eventually bought by a management group lead by former Lakers great Magic Johnson.

In just a short two years the Sparks were back on top of the championship mountain, literally going from the outhouse to the penthouse thanks to Ogwumike’s late shot.
