Los Angeles Dodgers: 3-team trade ideas with White Sox for Joc Pederson
By Jason Reed
Trade 3:
-
Los Angeles Dodgers receive: Mookie Betts
-
Chicago White Sox receive: Joc Pederson,
-
Boston Red Sox receive: Dustin May, Jeter Downs, Jonathan Stiever, Seby Zavala
Remember when we said that the Los Angeles Dodgers may be looking to make room for Mookie Betts? Well, in this trade, the team is quite literally trading Joc Pederson and prospects for Betts and the White Sox are in the trade to help.
The one conflicting reason why a trade like this may never happen is if the Red Sox want Pederson as part of a Betts package to serve as a one-year option while the team assesses the long-term future of the outfield. However, if that is not an issue, the White Sox can be valuable.
This trade essentially has the same precedent as the Kluber trade but with one different prospect in Jonathan Stiever. This is because pitching for the Cleveland Indians is no problem whereas the Red Sox need future help in the rotation, hence why a pitching prospect is included in this deal from Chicago.
The Red Sox would be getting a good return for Betts and any Red Sox fan that says otherwise is asking for too much. The team is getting two top-100 prospects in Dustin May and Jeter Downs while also getting a quality pitching prospect that is probably in the top-200 and a big-league catching prospect that can serve as depth.
That is quite the return for just one season of Betts and is more than the team will get if they wait until the trade deadline.
Now if I am the Dodgers I only do this trade under the impression that Betts is interested in signing an extension. If that is not a possibility then I do not pull the trigger whatsoever.
Having the White Sox in this deal allows the Dodgers to save another top-100 prospect. Even if the team were to just trade Pederson to Boston, they probably would still have to throw another top-100 guy in there, such as Keibert Ruiz, as Pederson is only a one-year option as well.
Trading Pederson to Chicago, though, and using those two prospects as added ammunition for Betts helps maintain the Dodgers’ farm despite trading two top-100 guys.
