LA Lakers should talk Darren Collison out of retirement

The LA  Lakers are buyers once again as the NBA trade deadline nears. Rather than a trade, they should try to sign Darren Collison.

The LA Lakers are already so dominant in many different ways. Having the best record in the Western Conference, having the best road record, and having two top-ten players in the league.

What more does this team need?

The one position the Lakers need to address the most is the point guard position.

Normally, Rajon Rondo comes off the bench as a true “point guard”, however, his play has been average at best. Is Alex Caruso a viable starting caliber point guard? Quinn Cook isn’t necessarily utilized much by Coach Frank Vogel due to his size and lack of defensive ability.

Derrick Rose

There have been multiple reports saying that the Lakers will try trading for Derrick Rose.

Rose has been having an exceptional year to say the least, averaging 18.8 points per game, while shooting 49.8% from the field.

The question is, who would you even trade for Rose? When it comes to making decisions, we have to be realistic. Sure, it’d be nice for us to have Rose, but what would Detroit want?

With the direction they’re headed in, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted at least Kyle Kuzma. And I’m here to say that it would make the Lakers worse by essentially trading Kuzma for Rose.

In general, I’m not a huge fun of trading any players away to acquire a player like Rose. Kuzma has to be untouchable, and if the Lakers are trying to get better, how much better would they get by trading Kuzma in general?

Bogdan Bogdanovic

I’ve also heard reports about a Kuzma-Bogdan Bogdanovic exchange with the Sacramento Kings. Again, how much better would that trade make us? If anything, we’d have to figure out chemistry again, and our momentum would take a hit.

On top of that, you have to realize that Bogdanovic becomes a restricted free-agent after this season. Would the Lakers pay him a lot of money? If not, he’s basically gone. Why would you want a one-year rental? This move wouldn’t even GUARANTEE the Lakers a championship.

Darren Collison

What I believe the Lakers should do is to be extremely aggressive in acquiring a point guard like Darren Collison. He retired last June, but is reportedly “mulling” a return in February.

Last season with Indiana, Collison averaged 11.2 points per game on 40.7% shooting from behind the arc. Collison is also pretty efficient on the defensive end as well.

Most of the trade offers that are being “reported” for the Lakers, don’t even end up favoring them at the end of the day.

By signing Collison, it would bolster our point guard depth, and it would expand our roster depth in general. We need to expand our depth, not give it up.

What the Lakers need is another scorer; someone who can come off the bench and just flat-out score. Collison has the ability to create his own shot, and shoot efficiently from deep.

Once again, some Laker fans are extremely greedy, and they will voice their discontent after every loss. Bolster the depth by signing players like Collison, not by trade.

Don’t be too greedy, or it will backfire. Don’t fix anything that ain’t broke.
