Los Angeles Chargers: Current quarterback options better than Tom Brady
By Jason Reed
2. Cam Newton
Now, this one would take some things to happen as Cam Newton is not readily available on the market. However, while Newton himself has said that he expects to be the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback next season, we certainly cannot rule out the Panthers in moving on from Newton.
There are multiple reasons to think that this could be the case. First of all, the Panthers are entering a new era in the franchise with new head coach Matt Rhule. With the seventh-overall pick in the draft, the Panthers could select someone Rhule likes and build the franchise with that vision.
It makes it easier to do that as Newton only has one year left under contract. If the Panthers are not looking to re-sign him anyway, it would make more sense to get something out of one year of Newton, especially if they have a quarterback that they like in this year’s draft.
The great thing for the Chargers is that the Panthers do not have much leverage as they only have one year left of Newton and by shopping him, with his injuries, they remove any leverage they would have had. The Chargers might be able to get away with sending a third and future fourth for Cam, especially considering the salary they would be taking on.
If the Chargers want to go the route of having a stop-gap quarterback before turning the franchise over to a young quarterback they could go with one year of Cam to help sell tickets as well as legitimately contend for the playoffs.
I would not even rule the Chargers out in drafting a quarterback this year, letting them sit and learn for a year, getting the benefit of the ticket sales from Netwon and then moving on with the young quarterback.
It essentially is a better version of the Tom Brady plan.
