2. Cam Newton as a bridge quarterback is perfect

Newton is a free agent after this season and while the Los Angeles Chargers could re-sign him if he plays well in his one year, I think the team is more likely to use Newton as a bridge quarterback for one season.

The only concern with this plan would be how reception Newton is to it. He might not be open to the idea of getting traded across the country for one season, knowing that he is going to have to find a new home in a year. However, after being injured last season, Newton does not have any leverage in this situation.

This would allow the Chargers to ease into a new, young starting quarterback without simply throwing him to the wolves in the first season. There is a good chance that two quarterbacks, who will be Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa, will be selected before the sixth overall pick, leaving Justin Herbert as the next best option for the Chargers.

While Burrow and Tua could be starters right away, it would not hurt to give Herbert, who has potential, a season to learn the NFL way and mature. Plus, by going this route, the Chargers could maximize the 2020 NFL Draft in terms of value.

The next two teams that the Chargers have to worry about in selecting a quarterback are the Oakland Raiders and Indianapolis Colts with the 12th and 13th pick, respectively.

That means a team, such as the Cleveland Browns, who are desperate for a certain talent could trade up to the sixth overall pick, and in the process, the Chargers would likely get a third-round pick and a future late-round pick.

That not only makes up for the cost of getting Newton but would be an improvement in assets, which is great for a team that needs to rebuild the offensive line.

Regardless, Newton is great when he is healthy and with the Chargers having a talented team around him, he would be a great quarterback to make the team competitive in 2020 without having to buy in long-term.
