Los Angeles Dodgers: Joe Davis’s best calls with the Dodgers
By Jason Reed
2. “Absolute madness!”
The perfect representation of the 2017 season was not Chris Taylor’s walk-off single, although Davis provided the call with what we were all thinking at the time. Instead, the perfect representation of how the Dodgers would not accept losing in 2017 was their April win against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Little did we know at the time that the Dodgers would go on to have one of the best and most entertaining seasons in franchise history. The team was talented, the first month was solid, but at the time, reaching the World Series still felt like something Dodger fans would never see again.
The wild and fun ride of 2017 started on this night. Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dodgers did the unthinkable. Yasiel Puig, Cody Bellinger (who was still new to the team) and a pinch-hitting Justin Turner blasted back-to-back-to-back home runs to open the inning to tie the game.
“Swing and a drive… Absolute Madness!”
Later, with two outs and runners on first and second, Adrian Gonzalez slapped a ball in the 5-6 hole that the Phillies could not field and the Dodgers won the game.
“The Dodgers win it! A night to remember!”
We remember it. Davis, who was just a month into the job, gave us his first vintage call and reassured us that he was the right man for the job.
Most people would rank this as their best Joe Davis call, however, because of personal bias, we have a different number one.
